Shikareswaram Temple is about 8kms from the Main Temple on the highest peak of Srisailam known as sikharam. It is at a height of 2830 feet from the sea level. This temple is dedicated to Sikhareswara Swami.

It is believed that Lord Shiva, pleased with the prayers of his devotees, manifested in the form of Veera Sankara Swamy, popularly known as Sikhareswara Swamy. The popular belief is that Lord Siva in this form can free his devotees from their sins.

Sikhareswaram temple, is an ancient temple in the serenity of nature and captivating architecture.This temple is consisted of Garbhagriha and an Antaralaya. There is a 16 pillar mukhamandapam to the temple.

There are around 150 steps to the temple. However, if you are entering the temple from southern side, then you can reach by climbing around 30 steps only. The steps to this temple were built in 1398 AD by the Reddy Kings. It was during the same time a Puskarini was also built for the convenience of the visiting Pilgrims.

During the medieval times this spot was the centre for many secret sects of Saivisam who performed their rituals in the cave like chambers which can be seen even today.

This place gives a panoramic view of the entire valley and the beautiful forest including the river Krishna. It is also said that from this Shikara if one can see the Gopuram of the Srisailam temple, one will be blessed with Moksha,which means freedom from the cycle of rebirth, as explained in The Skanda Purana.
