Uma Maheswaram:

Uma Maheshwaram is a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva in Telangana, India. It is in the picturesque Nallamala forest range around 130 kilometers away from Hyderabad on the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway.

Umamaheshwaram is the Northern Gateway of Srisailam — one of the 12 jyotirlingas. It is mentioned in many Vedas that visit to a Srisailam without Umamaheswaram is incomplete. It is atop the hill properly covered by huge trees. Hill ranges shields the temple and 500 metres of stretch to PapaNasanam. Through the day hardly any sunlight falls on this stretch, thus maintaining the temperature below normal year round.

A festival is held here annually during February and March to celebrate Maha Shivaratri, the Great Night of Shiva.

This temple is located at the start of the Nallamala forest, around 130 kilometers away from Hyderabad on the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway. one can enjoy the Nallamala beauty from this temple. It is atop the hill and covered by huge trees. Hill ranges shields the temple and a short walk from the temple, will take you to Papanasanam, a small stream that flows beneath the mountain rocks. The speciality of Papanasanam is that, the stream flows into a small pit and at any given time, you can scoop out a mug of water and the moment you take some water out, it refills itself within seconds ! The belief is, sprinkling this water over you will wash away your sins.

History:

After killing Ravana, Sri Rama started pradakshina of Srisailam from this place. The important locations of this area are Papanashanam, water falls, Bhogamaheswaram and the caves where the sages did meditation. Uma Maheswaram is a celebrated temple since Kakatiya Period and Maha Shivarathri is celebrated with great splendor here. The importance of this temple is mentioned in Puranas and Epics. The waters in the hills and woods look very beautiful and it is very cool even in summer.

There are no food options near Uma Maheswaram as this temple is on a mountain if the forest. Kalwakurthy, 60 kms from Uma Maheswaram is an option otherwise Srisailam is about 85 Km.

Where to stay:

Srisailam, at a distance of 85 kms, is a better idea if you wish to stay overnight.
